The Human Fund takes what some would consider a classic and cover it in a wonderfully upswing alternative pop rock style and do so with the true grit of loose but perfect grunge tone and an energy that serves the song damn well all in all.
The song is a cover of Daniel Johnston's "True Love Will Find You in The End" which is no easy accomplishment and I'll tell you why.
Some of Daniel Johnston's songs are considered to be the most covered in the early to mid 90's and then again in the early 2000's.
If you don't know much about Johnston, it's quite an amazing story and you can find out plenty by simply watching The Devil and Daniel Johnston which is a doc on the artist.
Now, covering a Johnston song takes balls but also has to be done a certain way or just...not at all really.
The Human Fund has taken this classic and given it a crisp new spin and accomplish it with their staple style as a band but as they do this, they also give the performance everything they have.
This is what you need to do in order to cover a song like this. You have to lay it all out. The performance has to be genuine and full of heart and character.
This is a love letter to the artist and his songwriting and so it's not just for some publicity or to try and be cool. Although it doesn't hurt.
No, this is done as a passion project and The Human Fund as a whole is exactly that.
The song wails out, rocks hard, and boasts the perfect attitude and approach.
This was more than impressive and should be turned way up!
If you're a Daniel Johnston fan, you'll love this. That's saying a lot I know. But trust me. Iam, and I do.
The single will be available everywhere this Friday so in preparation I'd suggest checking out the band's recent album as well.
